Last Tuesday, Feb., 28, Black Milk dropped by Silk City’s Heinekin Green Room for his Claps and Slaps tour featuring his band, Nat Turner and a few other performers including Seattle’s J Pinder and two of Philly’s own, Chill Moody an Dj Statik.
Hailing from the Detroit, Black Milk has been gaining quite the reputation and street cred as a producer and MC since ‘05 when his first album, Sound of the City dropped. Since then he’s released four other albums, most notably his ‘08 album, Tronic and his latest record from '10, Album of the Year. First a producer, Black Milk’s music can be hard to define since his beats are often mixed in with instrumental elements. Featured in Album of the Year, Black Milk incorporated guitars, drums and some brass over his beats and lyrics recreating hip-hop into a soul/motown and rap hybrid. His music stands out from other rappers and producers so much that it got the attention of Jack White (The White Stripes) who asked to collab with Black Milk. Together they created his latest single, “Brain” with White co-producing and on the guitar.
Black Milk definitely brough his Motor City motown funk to Silk City’s Heniken Green Room. As the beer flowed the room became more and more packed as people crowded the stage to vibe to Black Milk and his guests. J Pinder killed his set while Philly’s own Chill Moody got the crowd hype and going by performing songs from his very latest record, Who Do You Love, which was just released in February and is availble for free on his site, www.chillmoody.com.
