Spiral Q. Puppet Theater: Social Activism Through Art

by Sasha C. Mendez
Social activism is STILL a REAL thing in Philadelphia. Get Involved.

Now that the Occupy Philly Movement has lost its mainstream appeal and begun the unfortunate decent into the fringes of hardcore “Hipsterdom” while maintaining the basis of a territorial war between political vagabonds and the homeless, it seems that Philadelphians are somewhat hesitant to be associated with the terms ‘social activism’. In reality the city’s relationship with social activism has been a strong one with a long history. Just because Occupy Philly has slowly come to mean Occupy Starbucks, does not mean that social activism is a trend we let fade. There are still sources in the city to make a difference.

Nestled between the Philadelphia Museum of Art and University City neighborhood (more specifically 3114 Spring Garden Street) lays the Spiral Q. Theater. The Q is a combined museum and center for community social justice pageantry via giant paper mache puppets. Additionally, the theater promotes social justice through youth programs, through arts & organizing community engagement, exhibitions and public engagements. The Spiral Q prides itself on building strong and equitable communities characterized by creativity, joy, can-do attitudes, and the courage to act on their convictions. Pretty awesome stuff.  Wondering how you can get involved?

Feel free to contact the Spiral Q to volunteer, make donations, and or incorporate the Q dynamic into your own events, classrooms, and organizations. You can also keep up with the Q’s events; they tend to take place all around the city. GET INVOLVED PEOPLE, they even accept brown paper grocery bags.

An upcoming event is the Spiral Q’s sassy sounding ‘Q-Licious: Express Yourself! From the Personal to the Political, a Celebration of 15 Years of Arts & Activism’.  When: Saturday February 11, 2012 8-11pm. Where:  The Ethical Society Building: 1906 Rittenhouse Square. Tickets are $65 in advance – $75 at the door. The evening’s program will include: The Powelton Steppers, The Q. Awards, STRONGERcircus, Miss Martha Graham Cracker, Maggy Thump on turntables, and desserts!
