Varga Calendar Girls

by Desiree Raucci
What better way to support our troops than a calendar filled with sexy gals in lingerie?

On Wednesday, December 7th, Varga Bar located on 10th and Spruce Streets hosted a debut party for their 2012 Pin-up girl calendar. Not only is the calendar a tasty sight, 25 percent of the profits benefit the USO. Approaching 9:30 pm, Varga is packed with sophisticated and chic faces, upon walking in the door I am greeted with Debbie head of the USO Young Leadership Council. She explains with enthusiasm, that the Young Leadership Council is a way to get the younger set involved with the USO, and what better way than a risqué calendar sporting some of the sexiest girls in Philly. The 25 percent of profits support our local USO, spanning from all of Pennsylvania to Southern New Jersey. Also accompanying Debbie, the head of the USO, Joe Brooks and Kerri, director of Marketing. Kerri was very cheerful and glowing with USO pride, expressing that this is the third year the calendar has gone out, and it definitely will not be the last. It is a fun way for the USO name to get out and help support our troops, not to mention the retro feel of the Pin-up girl.

The Pin-up girl and the military have a very long history together. Yet, as time went on, more and more skin was acceptable to be shown, instead of the quaint, tasteful look of the Pin-up girl. Perhaps it is time to re-vamp the idea, and that is exactly what the Photographers of the calendar had in mind. Darah and Siobhan of Doll Face Studio located on 4th and Brown Streets in Northern Liberties are the masterminds behind this “boudoir inspired” photo shoot. Doll Face Studio has a love for boudoir, much like my own and you can see the love in the photos, Varga has blown up and placed on the walls around the bar. The models look lovely, in vintage inspired poses, with their mouths poised in sexy smirks or eyes sparkling with inviting twinkle.

The calendar girls were also in attendance in classy attire. Michele, Ms. October was a newbie to the Varga calendar and said the shoot couldn’t’ have been more fun or inviting. “The photographers made every girl feel comfortable and we just had a really good time.” Her red lips curved up into a smirk when I thanked her for her time, and I could see why she was selected for this shoot.

Dawn, Ms. August whose photo shows her holding beers while in frilly underwear was extremely passionate about the calendar. This is her second year involved and last year she was featured on the cover. Her bubbly personality matched the way she was depicted in the photo hanging above her head, I asked Dawn if the shoot was comfortable and fun much like how Michele expressed. Laughing she replied, “Totally fun, but it was kind of hard to feel completely comfortable when your topless holding a six pack of beer.”

In the hour, I was squeezing myself around Varga it had become even more crowded with handsome men dressed in suits, and women in cocktail dresses. Varga must be very pleased with the success of the calendar and the opening party that served delicious small bites and one-hour open bar. I grabbed a calendar as I was leaving, proud that something so fun could benefit our troops.
